Worker dies at Stellantis stamping plant in Sterling Heights

A worker at Stellantis Sterling Stamping Plant in Sterling Heights died this week after a machine fell on him. The worker was lifting a press machine with a crane Wednesday night in order to work on it, according to an initial Sterling Heights Police investigation, and the machine shifted, falling on the man and crushing him. He was later taken to an area hospital. It wasn t immediately clear if that s where he died. Jodi Tinson a spokeswoman for Stellantis, the company formed from the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Peugeot maker PSA Group   provided a statement about Wednesday s death:

A Stellantis NV employee died this week after machinery collapsed on him while on the job at the Sterling Stamping Plant in Sterling Heights. The findings were a part of a preliminary investigation by the Sterling Heights Police Department of the Wednesday evening incident that led to the death of the 57-year-old Shelby Township resident, Lt. Mario Bastianelli said. The transatlantic automaker confirmed the employee s death. In a Facebook post, United Auto Workers Local 1264 identified the individual as a third-shift crane operator. Stellantis confirms that there was a workplace accident at the Sterling Stamping Plant on April 21, resulting in the death of one of our employees, spokeswoman Jodi Tinson said in a statement. The incident is currently under investigation. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of our employee.

On April 6, Sterling Heights city officials gathered at the Sterling Heights Community Center and rolled out a list of “Break-Free Blast” public events starting in late spring and continuing through the rest of the year. Sterling Heights Mayor Michael Taylor lamented how the Community Center had to close so soon after its Feb. 29, 2020, grand opening and how the last major event the city had prior to shutdowns was the Cultural Exchange. Even the 2020 Sterlingfest Art and Music Fair was canceled.
