Tecumseh Police sergeant dies in tree-cutting accident Updated Dec 16, 2020; Facebook Share TECUMSEH, MI – A Tecumseh Police Department sergeant died in a tree-cutting accident Monday. Sgt. Darrin Briggs was using a chainsaw to cut a tree into pieces around 6:50 p.m., Dec. 14, in the 7000 block of Sterling Road in Hillsdale County, when part of the trunk fell on him, Michigan State Police said previously. An investigation shows the tree likely had blown over before the man started cutting it and part of the trunk rotated backward and fell on him, police said. Briggs, 45, of Jerome, started working at the Tecumseh Police Department in July 1997, Tecumseh police said. He graduated from Reading High School in 1993, then attended Lake Superior State University, his obituary reads.

An investigation into the incident revealed that a large tree had blown over recently and the man had been using a chainsaw to cut the tree into sections. At one point while he was cutting the trunk of the tree it rotated back towards him, knocking him down and trapping him underneath causing fatal injuries.
