Sweeping changes to New York City’s specialized high school and competitive middle school application process were announced Friday by Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Richard A. Carranza in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and vocal critics calling for more diversity in the city’s most esteemed schools.

When schools began to shutter across New York City in March in an effort to stem the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), St. Joseph Hill Academy in Arrochar knew it would need to adapt to ensure its elementary and high school students continued to learn. While students were able to log on for remote learning in the spring, the 2020-2021 school year would see students returning to their classroom for blended in-person learning. And elementary school Principal Lawrence Hansen and high school Principal Maria Molluzzo said they knew they wanted students who were learning remotely from home to get the same experience as those learning in-person.
