(ATR) The claim of a Greek champion in Olympic sailing that she was raped by an official with the national sailing federation in 1998 is provoking national attention.
Speaking last week at an online conference organized by the Ministry of Sport, Sofia Bekatorou went public with her accusation for the first time. She said the official committed lewd acts in his hotel room during a meeting meant to review planning for the Sydney Olympics. She was 21 at the time.

Sailing coach arrested in Greece over alleged rape of underage athlete Tuesday, 26 January 2021
A former sailing coach has been arrested in Greece on charges of sexual abuse after being accused of raping an 11-year-old athlete nine years ago.
According to the
Prosecutors have received testimonies from the athlete, now aged 21, and her parents.
The coach has reportedly been charged with aggravated rape, repeated seduction and misconduct.
The accused had earlier given a media interview, where he claimed he had not raped the young girl.
He claimed the relationshi ” had started when the girl was 13 and said he wanted to marry her.
Greece’s Olympic sailing champion Sofia Bekatorou’s decision to speak out over an alleged sexual assault by a high-ranking federation official in 1998 has set off the country’s #MeToo movement. Following the powerful testimony on the assault that occurred during preparations for the 2000 Sydney Olympics in the federation official’s hotel room, the Athens public prosecutor’s office launched a preliminary investigation and when the official’s name was revealed, his Hellenic Sailing Federation (HSF) membership was suspended. The Shooting Federation of Cyprus is aware of at least five incidents of alleged sexual abuse after Commonwealth Games champion Andri Eleftheriou gave the name of an alleged attacker to the police.
Eleftheriou had first spoken out about being subject to abuse in 2018, but the incident is back under the spotlight after Greek sailor Sofia Bekatorou made similar allegations this week.
Bekatorou, who won gold in the 470 class at a home Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, said she was sexually abused in 1998 by a high-ranking member of the Hellenic Sailing Federation.
This sparked other victims of abuse to share their experiences.
