Back in 1972, partygoers throughout the Perth County waiting to ring in 1973 had to wait an extra second for that first kiss. On Dec. 31, 1972, there was an actual extra second added, known as a leap second. A leap second is added to Co-ordinated Universal Time in order to synchronize clocks worldwide with the Earth’s ever-slowing rotation.
