Be it by a hidden sniper, a metal mop handle, deadly gunfire or a cornered suspect, the last century has seen the service of seven Pocono law enforcement officers cut short.
Their names belong to a growing list of those killed in the line of duty, commemorated every May 15 for Peace Officers Memorial Day. President John F. Kennedy first issued a proclamation for the memorial day in 1962 to ensure their service and sacrifice would not be forgotten.
Bryon Dickson II, Joshua Miller, William Evans, Samuel Van Auken, George Knapp, Joseph McHugh and Adam Strunk are among more than 22,000 names inscribed in the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.
Voters in each primary can vote for four candidates, so anywhere from four to six candidates could move on to the November election, depending on whether the exact same candidates or somewhat different sets are victorious in each primary.
Voters in the following precincts will vote in this race: East Stroudsburg First Ward, East Stroudsburg Second Ward, East Stroudsburg Third Ward, East Stroudsburg Fourth Ward, East Stroudsburg Fifth Ward, East Stroudsburg Sixth Ward, Middle Smithfield Eastern, Middle Smithfield Western, Price, Smithfield One, Smithfield Two, Smithfield Three and Smithfield Four.
The seats are at-large, meaning voters in all precincts across the district determine who fills all the seats, as opposed to school directors being elected by regions within the district.
Principal Tammy Tolino of Pocono Mountain East High School said prom will happen this year at Pocono Raceway on May 15. The theme is A Night on the Red Carpet that will take place in and around the Raceway s garage area.
Both sides of the garage will be open with a lot of room for all the seniors and their guests,” Tolino said. “Everything will be open, just covered on top. There is also a pavilion and a lot of open space to allow for social distancing.”
Principal Michael Jones of Pocono Mountain West said prom will take place on the West campus on May 22. He said student council, advisors and the planning committee took students’ input and they preferred to host the event on campus with a mixed use of the courtyard and parking lot.
Ten candidates have filed to run for the Stroudsburg Area School District board of school directors. They have all cross-filed, meaning they will appear on ballots in both the Democratic and Republican primaries.
