Family members of a Virginia man who was shot multiple times by a sheriffâs deputy last week spoke publicly on Monday alongside their lawyer, who called for accountability within the department.
The family said Monday that 34-year-old Isaiah Brownâs condition remains âtouch and goâ after he was shot during an incident with the Spotsylvania County Sheriffâs Department on Wednesday morning.
âIâm numb. I think weâre all kind of numb,â said Yolanda Brown, Isaiahâs sister. âItâs just a lot.â

The family attorney for an unarmed man shot and wounded by a Virginia sheriff’s deputy said the shooting occurred because of a “failure of communication” between 911 dispatchers and deputies on the scene.
Isaiah Brown, 32, was shot by a Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s deputy while Brown was on the phone with 911 dispatch, David Haynes, the Brown family attorney, said in a news conference in Spotsylvania Courthouse on Monday morning.
Haynes said the deputy opened fire after mistaking Brown’s cordless phone for a gun.
Brown had “communicated very clearly to dispatch that he had no weapon and there’s no reason that the deputy should not have been informed of that,” Haynes said.

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WWBT) - The attorney for Isaiah Brownâs family says the shooting was a failure between officers and the 911 dispatcher.
âThis was clearly a failure between dispatch and the officers who arrived on the scene,â the Brown familyâs attorney, David Haynes of The Cochran Firm, said. âThe deputies made terribly, grave and basic policing errors.â
