5:19 AM MYT BRUSSELS, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) Seven days before the Brexit transition period ends on Dec. 31, the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK) on Thursday afternoon announced the reaching of an agreement that will govern the EU-UK trade and security relationship starting from Jan. 1, 2021. The European Parliament and EU member states hailed the last-minute deal with relief while some, with a sentiment tinged with caution, pledged to scrutinize the text before giving a green light. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, at a press conference in Brussels, said the 27-member bloc has reached a fair and balanced agreement with Britain.

MADRID (Reuters) – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Madrid and London would continue to negotiate an agreement on the British territory of Gibraltar on the Iberian Peninsula after the Brexit trade deal clinched with the European Union on Thursday.
“I welcome the principle of agreement between the EU and the UK … Spain and the UK continue their dialogue to reach an agreement on Gibraltar,” Sanchez said in a tweet, adding that EU member states would still examine the Brexit deal in coming days.

Madrid and London have yet to reach agreement on the status of Gibraltar, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Thursday after Britain and EU finally sealed a Brexit trade deal.
The easy flow of people and goods across the border from Spain which underpins the economy of Gibraltar, a tiny British territory on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, risks ending when Britain leaves the EU at midnight on December 31.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has asked leaders of Spain and the Netherlands to back Beijing s proposed investment deal with the European Union, after a high-level French official threatened to block it over forced-labor concerns.
The intensive diplomatic maneuvering on Wednesday marked Beijing s drive to secure the deal before Joe Biden is sworn in as US president in four weeks and seeks to coordinate China policy with Europe.
