(WYFF) - An Upstate man has been arrested more than two weeks after he beat his girlfriend with a liquor bottle and set her on fire, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office. Larry Dean Brown, Jr., 28, of Spartanburg is charged with domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature and arson, warrants showed. Lt. Kevin Bobo said the investigation began Dec. 16 when the brother of the woman called deputies and told them about the attack, which happened on Dec. 6.

On December 16, 2020, an investigator with our Special Victims Unit was notified by a brother that his sister was the victim of a domestic violence/arson incident. The brother stated the incident occurred at her residence in this county on December 6, 2020. The boyfriend assaulted the victim with a liquor bottle, then poured gasoline on her and set her on fire. The victim was able to put the fire out by jumping into a bathtub and then drove herself to the hospital. Because of the severity of her injuries, the victim wasn’t able to provide emergency room personnel any specific details about the incident as they initially treated her and then transferred her to the Augusta Burn Center.

Spartanburg man dies from injuries suffered in shooting

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger has identified a 23-year-old man who was shot and killed Monday. Rodderick Lakeem Sparks, of Laconia Circle, was pronounced dead at 10:45 p.m. Monday at Spartanburg Medical Center. The shooting is being investigated as a homicide, Clevenger said. Authorities report the shooting happened on Pinegate Drive, where some students live off campus while attending the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg County. A forensic exam has been scheduled for Tuesday. The Spartanburg County Sheriff s office and Coroner s Office are investigating. USC Upstate officials said Sparks was a student and they are saddened by his death. The university also said the shooting is an isolated incident and that there is no threat to campus.
