Springfield City Council has voted to lift all pandemic restrictions after May 27, including face masks, occupancy limits and physical distancing, even though local immunization rates against the disease have not yet met the original target of 50 percent.
Council members voted Monday night to remove all COVID restrictions following the recommendation of the Springfield-Greene County Health Department, moving from the “yellow” to the “green phase” of the city’s COVID-19 Road to Recovery plan. Face masks and social distancing will no longer be required after May 27.
Earlier in the pandemic, officials said the city would only lift those restrictions once 50% of residents had been fully vaccinated. But as of Tuesday, the number of vaccinated residents stands at 35.6%, according to the health department. Health officials in Greene County say it’s time to do away with the mask mandate.
Katie Towns is the interim director of the Springfield-Greene County Health Department.
She recommends ending the mask ordinance on May 27.
That’s the last day for Springfield Public Schools.
Springfield City Council will vote on an ordinance Monday night.
She says city leaders should also remove any outdoor masking policies.
42-percent of people in Springfield have been vaccinated against COVID-19, while 38-percent of people in Greene County have received their shots.

The community is inching closer to the goal of having half of the eligible Greene County residents vaccinated against COVID-19 by Memorial Day, but health department officials are hopeful that will happen. On April 16, the City of Springfield moved from the Red to Yellow phase set by the Springfield-Greene County Health Department. This phase allows large gatherings â over 500 participants â at 50% capacity with masks and social distancing.
