The use of containers and open source virtualisation without relying on VMware could disrupt the HCI market IBM attempts HCI again with container-native platform IBM has announced plans to launch a new container-native hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) platform in the second half of 2021 - an addition to the existing HCI solutions it sells with Nutanix. A software-defined storage (SDS) version will follow in early 2022.

IBM Focuses on Data Management in Hybrid Cloud with Storage Launches

IBM s new container-native software-defined storage solutions will help companies expand data availability across the hybrid cloud. IBM is updating its storage portfolio to improve data access and management across the hybrid cloud. The company will debut a new container-native software defined storage (SDS) solution, IBM Spectrum Fusion, this quarter. IBM designed it to integrate the company’s general parallel file system technology with its data protection software. This, IBM says, offers a simpler approach to accessing data within the data center, at the edge and in the hybrid cloud. IBM said Spectrum Fusion will come as a container-native hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) system. This will integrate compute, storage and networking into a single solution. Delivered with Red Hat OpenShift, it will enable organizations to support environments for both virtual machines and containers. Moreover, it will provide software-defined storage for cloud, edge and containerized

Big Blue also unveiled a new entry-level model in its IBM Elastic Storage System all-flash storage family. The introduction of IBM Spectrum Fusion, initially as IBM’s first hyper-converged infrastructure appliance and eventually as a software-only technology, is part of a larger strategy to help clients and channel partners better manage data across hybrid environments, said Eric Herzog, chief marketing officer and vice president of global storage channels for IBM’s Storage Division. “Our storage is designed to simplify data availability spanning the cloud, the core, and the edge,” Herzog told CRN. “IBM is also expanding its partner base looking for partners who can handle hybrid cloud, core, and edge deployments with AI and analytics.”
