Government is to make a decision in early 2021 as to whether a third telecommunications provider will be given a licence to operate in Jamaica.
Daryl Vaz, Minister of Science, Energy and Technology made the disclosure at a press conference Wednesday.
Vaz indicated that the need for a third player in the market had become more urgent because of the increased demand for Internet brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“You will look forward to a third entrant in the market in 2021,” the minister said.
For years the telecommunications market, providing Internet, cable television and voice services has been dominated by two major players, Digicel and Flow.
