Officials on Monday announced that the state’s nearly 500 licensed marijuana retailers could begin hosting vaccine clinics and offering a single, free pre-rolled marijuana cigarette to anyone aged 21 or above who received a shot there. It is one of many vaccine incentives being offered in Washington, including free pints of beer, sports tickets and prize money to lure those who have been hesitant or just lazy.

Now in June, Spokane County’s vaccine data by zip codes shows us lower income & rural areas are still struggling to vaccinate. The three zip codes giving the most shots are all around the South Hill with more than 50% of residents with at least one shot of the vaccine to this point. Now, compare that to the three lowest rates in Spokane; Latah, Elk and Fairfield, all with less than 30% of residents vaccinated.

Interim Eastern Washington President David May announced the new decision on Thursday. The Cheney, Washington, campus is scheduled to reopen on July 1. May wrote a letter to the campus saying the decision was made after talking to EWU faculty experts, the American College Health Association, and the health officer at the Spokane Regional Health District, Dr. Frank Velasquez.
