Ruth Simmons, the former president of Smith College in Northampton, is no stranger to how educational philanthropy works in our country. At Smith and later at Brown University, she witnessed first-hand the philanthropic patterns at schools rich with endowments and regular support by wealthy alumni.
So, when the call came recently to Prairie View A & M in Texas, the historically Black university she now leads, that it would be receiving a $50 million gift, Simmons was, in a word, “stunned.”
