PARSIPPANY Exactly two weeks after hundreds of people rallied on Smith Field in support of Palestine, hundreds more stood on the same ground Sunday to stand with Israel in its latest deadly conflict with Hamas. This is not a rally just for Jewish people, said Cantor Menachem Toren of the Pine Brook Jewish Center. This is a rally for pro-peace. This is a rally for pro-coexistence. This a rally for the truth. Similar protests have become common around the world since the violence began on May 10. Israel said that Hamas, the militant group in Gaza, is to blame for the violence and that it acted in self-defense. Basem Naim, head of the Hamas International Relations Office, told NPR that they were reacting to Israel s recent forceful evictions of Palestinians from their homes.
The recent aggression has been the most violent outburst of conflict in years. Tensions have been escalating for weeks amid pending home evictions of Palestinians in east Jerusalem by Israeli settler groups and police raids and clashes at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem.
