A brief history of Monroe County | Something to Think About Debbie Kulick For those who were living in Monroe County in 2011, you may well recall the 175th Anniversary of the county date of creation.  The celebration was not as grandiose as that of the Sesquicentennial (150th), but it did have a significant amount of history shared by many local historians. The following county and township history was provided by Jeffrey L. Wright, Esq. The history of Monroe County, which was formed on April 1, 1836 from parts of Pike and Northampton Counties, is rich and certainly helps us understand much of the landscape we have today.

Man accused in Smithfield Township homicide headed to trial

SMITHFIELD TWP., Pa. - A man accused of killing another man with a metal manhole pick in Monroe County will stand trial. A criminal homicide charge for Harold Heffer was held for court in a preliminary hearing Wednesday. A formal arraignment is scheduled for Feb. 9.  Heffer is accused of using a metal manhole pick to stab and beat to death Howard Dowell in early October.  Heffer s fiancee awoke just before 4 a.m. to Heffer pointing a shotgun at her face and saying, he s dead, according to court paperwork. The woman called 911 and escaped the home through a window, saying she feared for her life.

Jefferson County sheriff Runaway: A Smithfield Township resident reported that a juvenile family member that is on probation ran away from home, Monday. Stolen: A Dillonvale resident reported that his license plate had been stolen from his sports car while it was parked at a family member’s house, Monday. Steubenville police Overdose: Police responded to a vehicle stopped in the roadway at the intersection of Washington and Fourth streets, Monday. According to the report, police were alerted that two individuals inside the vehicle might be overdosing. The officer said that as he approached the vehicle, he observed it to be in drive and the driver of the vehicle to appear “lifeless” and have blue lips. The passenger was “flailing” and a dog was preventing the officer from opening the door, the report said. Eventually the male came to and controlled the dog so the officer could administer aid to the driver.
