The museum is a division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, under the leadership of the Governor’s Commission to the New Mexico Museum of Space History. Programs and exhibits are supported by the International Space Hall of Fame Foundation through the generous support of donors. Dedicated Oct. 5, 1976, as the International Space Hall of Fame, the New Mexico Museum of Space History’s mission is to inspire and educate, to promote and preserve, and to honor the pioneers of space exploration.

Opinion: Property Appraiser is playing political games with Sarasota nonprofits

In a year of unprecedented challenges Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and other area cultural institutions are forced to defend our longstanding tax-exempt status, thanks to an unprecedented attack by Sarasota County Property Appraiser Bill Furst. Even though it’s clear that Selby Gardens fits the description of a nonprofit that deserves tax-exempt status, Furst is playing politics by claiming that our property is fully subject to taxation. The Property Appraiser denied Selby Gardens’ longstanding tax-exemption by 100% and issued us an annual tax bill of more than $1 million – which is equivalent to nearly four months of payroll for our botanists, horticulturists, educators and operations staff. Furst is claiming that none of Selby Gardens’ activities are for charitable, scientific or educational purposes.

Museum s Waterston Desert Writing Prize kicks off student competition

KTVZ file BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) Young writers from Crook, Deschutes, Harney, Jefferson and Lake counties are now invited to submit essays exploring desert landscapes to the High Desert Museum’s Waterston Student Essay Competition. The Waterston Student Essay Competition, now in its second year, is part of the Waterston Desert Writing Prize. It’s open to students in grades nine through 12, in public or private school, or home-schooled, who live in Crook, Deschutes, Harney, Jefferson and Lake counties. Submission is free. Students may submit essays of 750 to 1,000 words of nonfiction prose to waterston@highdesertmuseum.org from now through May 1, 2021. The submissions will be judged on originality, clarity of expression, accuracy, and their contribution to the understanding and appreciation of desert regions.
