A $1 4 trillion government funding deal approved with stimulus bill

Tom Brenner/Reuters Congress on Monday approved a $900 billion COVID-19 stimulus package that was combined with a $1.4 trillion government-funding bill. Among the provisions in the 5,000-plus-page bill is a stipulation that would make illegal streaming a felony. The omnibus package would give aid to Israel and Jordan and includes funding for the southern border wall, broadband, and the military. The bill is headed to President Donald Trump for his signature. The House of Representatives and the Senate on Monday approved a $900 billion stimulus package that would give Americans $600 checks and provide a $300 weekly federal unemployment benefit for 11 weeks. The stimulus was combined with a $1.4 trillion government-funding omnibus bill with a wide range of provisions including making illegal streaming a felony.

Tue, 12/22/2020 - 11:45am U.S. Senators Susan Collins, R-ME, and Dianne Feinstein, D-CA, announced that The Smithsonian Women’s History Museum Act passed the Senate as part of the year-end omnibus funding package.  This bipartisan legislation will establish a Smithsonian museum in Washington, D.C., honoring American women.  The legislation now heads to the President’s desk to be signed into law.   “As our Women’s Suffrage Centennial year draws to a close, I am delighted that Congress was able to work together in a bipartisan way to pass this legislation,” said Senator Collins.  “I look forward to the creation of a museum in our nation’s capital that celebrates the invaluable contributions women have made to our nation.”

Senator Mike Lee Disregards History While Claiming to Support American Unity

    Yesterday, a lone Senator blocked proposals for Smithsonian museums dedicated to Latinx and women s history from unanimous approval by the Senate. The Senator suggested that the two museums, which have strong bipartisan support in congress, would “further divide an already divided nation within an array of separate but equal museums of hyphenated identity group.”  My own experience with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture suggests that approval of the proposed museums represent an important step toward national unity. For context, I am biology professor who works with students interested in careers in healthcare.  In the spring of 2018 my students and I attended a conference in Washington D.C. related to their interest in the health professions.  We found ourselves with a day off from conference activities and so took the opportunity to visit some of the 19 Smithsonian Museums and Galleries in the capital city.  Given the div
