COLOMBO (News 1st); Medical Experts in Sri Lanka including the Government Medical Officers Association and the Sri Lanka Medical Association have called on the government to impose tough travel restrictions given the present spike in COVID-19 cases.
Dr. Padma Gunarathne, the President of the Sri Lanka Medical Association said the COVID-19 cases detected at present are those who contracted the virus around 04 weeks ago.
“They develop symptoms 02 weeks after contracting the virus and they are treated for 02 weeks in the Intensive Care Unit. Unfortunately, some don’t make it after another two weeks,” she pointed out.

In a letter to the President, the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA), the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA), the Association of Medical Specialists (AMS), together with the SLMA Intercollegiate Committee (SMIC) has made several recommendations in a bid to minimize COVID infections and deaths in the near future.
“We wish to emphasise that all healthcare resources are being overwhelmed, as indicated by the rapid increase in the utilisation of all health sector beds and healthcare facilities by COVID patients. The number requiring oxygen is very quickly and exponentially rising while waiting for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and hospital beds is also occurring,” the letter states.
Sri Lanka: Stop the criminal mishandling of the pandemic! Lockdown the country with full compensation to those affected!
As India is ravaged by a tsunami of the COVID-19 cases accounting for almost half of the global daily total, Sri Lanka is facing a new surge along with other countries in the region. Dr. Olivia Nieveras, officer-in-charge of the World Health Organization’s Colombo office, last week urged Sri Lanka to take “the latest coronavirus surge seriously.”
The new surge among the country’s 22 million people has shattered repeated claims by President Gotabhaya Rajapakse that, unlike other countries, Sri Lanka has brought the pandemic under control.
DHAKA, Bangladesh â India has tried to fight skyrocketing coronavirus infections by increasing its production of vaccines and banning their export, cutting off supplies to neighbors such as Bangladesh and Nepal as they struggle with infection surges of their own.
These nations have imposed lockdowns as residents of big cities flee to the countryside seeking safety. They are also turning to China and Russia for vaccines in a desperate effort to deal with a pandemic that is becoming bigger and deadlier across South Asia.Â
Although new, more transmissible variants appear to be partly behind the surge, experts say other factors are contributing, including large holiday gatherings and growing fatigue with social distancing and mask wearing.
