Apology and €2 5m settlement for girl injured at birth

Legal Affairs Correspondent Sligo University Hospital has apologised at the High Court to the parents of a five-and-a-half year old girl who was catastrophically injured at her birth. The parents of Megan McGoldrick called for policies and procedures to be reviewed, to prevent such an incident happening again. The court approved an interim settlement of €2.5 million for Megan, whose parents will return to court in three years time for the payment of further sums. The total settlement during Megan s life is likely to be among the largest paid out in such a case. The hospital and the HSE apologised to John and Andrea McGoldrick for the negligent management of the labour and delivery.

Letters to the editor: Lockdown of Churches and Free Parking at Hospitals

Letters to the editor: Lockdown of Churches and Free Parking at Hospitals File Photo ); Dear editor, Does your paper have the resources to locate the section of criminal law of which the 25 people and/or the priest, who gathered for prayer at a private location last Sunday were in breach? If a breach did not occur, as we suspect, is the person who called in the Gardai, guilty of harassment, or of some other misdemeanour? Please note the statement by Minister Stephen Donnelly, Minister for Health in Dail Eireann on 22nd October last year: “I assure the Deputy (Michael McNamara) and other colleagues that with regard to penalties, religious services are non-penal in that there is no penalty attached to them.”
