Modeling, learning, perception, and control methods for deformable object manipulation

Perceiving and handling deformable objects is an integral part of everyday life for humans. Automating tasks such as food handling, garment sorting, or assistive dressing requires open problems of modeling, perceiving, planning, and control to be solved. Recent advances in data-driven approaches, together with classical control and planning, can provide viable solutions to these open challenges. In addition, with the development of better simulation environments, we can generate and study scenarios that allow for benchmarking of various approaches and gain better understanding of what theoretical developments need to be made and how practical systems can be implemented and evaluated to provide flexible, scalable, and robust solutions. To this end, we survey more than 100 relevant studies in this area and use it as the basis to discuss open problems. To solve these problems, researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden are developing a microneedle patch that delivers antibiotics directly into the affected skin area. New results published in Advanced Materials Technologies show that the microneedle patch effectively reduces MRSA bacteria in the skin. MRSA (methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus) skin infections are potentially lethal, especially in patients with compromised immune systems. Vancomycin is one of the main treatments and is given as an intravenous injection. The reason the antibiotic is not given locally is because of its low ability to penetrate the skin. Photo: Ulf Sirborn “Our results indicate that these temperature sensing RNATs create an additional layer of protection that helps the bacteria colonize their normal habitat in the nose and throat,” says the paper’s first author Hannes Eichner, PhD student at the same department. “Interestingly, we saw that these RNATs do not possess any sequence similarity, but all retain the same thermosensing ability, which indicates that these RNATs have evolved independently to sense the same temperature cue in the nasopharynx to avoid immune killing.” More research is needed to understand exactly what triggers these pathogens to breach from the mucous membrane into the bloodstream and further into the brain. Future studies encompassing in vivo infection model are warranted to characterize the role of these RNATs during colonization and invasion, the researchers say.

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet have now studied a new PET tracer that is an important diagnostic tool for the disease. The study on the tracer substance BU99008, which is published in Molecular Psychiatry, can play a key part in the early identification of signs of Alzheimer’s disease. The binding of the PET-tracer BU99008 shows reactive astrogliosis in different parts of the brain of a deceased patient with Alzheimer’s disease.
