French fishing boats protest in front of the port of St Helier off the island of Jersey.
The UK government has said Navy ships patrolling Jersey amid a stand-off over fishing rights in the Channel island’s waters are to return home.
Patrol boats HMS Severn and HMS Tamar had been deployed less than 24 hours ago following warnings French fishing boats could mount a blockade to protest against the new licences they have been required to obtain from the Jersey government.
Early on Thursday, around 60 French fishing boats gathered off the island’s main port St Helier. At the height of the tensions, a Jersey fishing boat was rammed by a French trawler – with footage shared widely on social media.

In the past year, we’ve realised more than ever that having our immune systems in fine fettle puts us in the best position to fight off nasty infections like Covid.
Since the pandemic began, interest in nutrition and diet in relation to immunity has increased, reports the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF). But misconceptions surrounding this are rife.
The immune system is a complex network of cells and chemical compounds that helps defend the body against infections – and it’s not something that can be ‘boosted’ or ‘supercharged’. Dr Jenna Macciochi, an immunologist based at the University of Sussex, previously told HuffPost UK people mistakenly talk about the immune system as a binary of “weak” or “strong”.

“Can I take your father’s full name and his occupation?” the registrar asked, when my partner and I gave notice for our intention to marry last year. I had to consult LinkedIn before giving an accurate response.
I waited for the same question to be asked of my mother – the person who raised me – but it never came. Mothers weren’t considered important enough for marriage certificates, apparently.

We’ve heard of COVID tongue, rashes and even fingers and toes – and now there’s yet another possible sign you’ve had the virus: COVID nails.
Professor Tim Spector, principal investigator of the Zoe COVID Symptom Study app, shared a photo of the phenomenon on Twitter, suggesting COVID nails are “increasingly being recognized as the nails recover after infection and the growth recovers, leaving a clear line.”
Also known as Beau’s lines, the horizontal grooves or indentations appear in the nail plate and can be caused by the interruption of growth to your nail due to injury or illness. Spector noted that, in COVID patients, they can occur without the presence of skin rashes and appear to be harmless.
