Viasat presses FCC to review environmental impact of Starlink s satellites

Viasat has petitioned the FCC to conduct an environmental review of rival SpaceX s plan for Starlink, arguing that the resulting constellation of thousands of broadband satellites could be hazardous to the Earth s atmosphere, boost the risk of space debris-causing collisions and generate massive amounts of light pollution. Viasat s ask, explained in this December 22 filing with the FCC, stems from SpaceX s proposal to modify its deployment by lowering the orbital altitude of nearly 3,000 Starlink satellites. As Space News points out, satellite systems have enjoyed a categorical exemption from the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), which requires the FCC and other agencies to assess the environmental impacts of their actions.

Inmarsat readies for most ambitious tech roadmap in history - Runway Girl

Celebrating the fifth anniversary of its Global Xpress (GX) Ka-band network, Inmarsat is gearing up for the launch of four new GX payloads and three new GX satellites between now and year-end 2023. CEO Rupert Pearce characterizes this technology roadmap as the “most ambitious” in the company’s history, and notes that it is “fully-funded”. The London-headquartered satellite operator currently operates a five-satellite GX constellation, in addition to a fleet of L-band satellites. The fifth GX satellite, GX5, saw its commercial service introduction (CSI) in December 2020. Inmarsat’s satellite services support maritime, aviation, government and humanitarian users. In aviation, GX powers inflight connectivity (IFC) installations at Air New Zealand, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, and other carriers.

Kontron readies for airlines to roam between multiple networks - Runway Girl

These days, it’s common for airlines to run data over two different satcom pipes on longhaul flights, transmitting safety and operational data via safety-approved L-band satellite services while separately providing passengers and crew with onboard Internet and other applications over Ku- or Ka-band geostationary satellites. But in the coming years, multiple networks and new non-geostationary satellite constellations will increasingly be in play, and with it the expectation that airlines can seamlessly roam between them and experience region- and cost-optimized network service. It is against this backdrop that German multinational corporation Kontron has introduced its new ACE Flight 2780 Auxiliary Modem Unit, which allows a second or third satcom modem to be installed with the main modem manager (Modman) on aircraft.
