Charges have been laid against a person involved in a sideline assault at a children’s rugby league match in Lower Hutt. A 35-year-old will appear in the Hutt Valley District Court on Tuesday charged with injuring with intent to injure after an altercation in Wainuiomata last Thursday evening which saw a person taken to hospital. A person was treated for moderate injuries by Wellington Free Ambulance paramedics and taken to Hutt Hospital, another was taken into police custody.

The Automobile Association wants drink-drive testing to return to previous levels. About a third of all fatal crashes in New Zealand involve someone under the influence, but roadside testing has dropped off significantly in recent years.
A drink-driver who was caught travelling at more than 100kmh in 50kmh zone has escaped a criminal conviction, in part because he wants to become a professional driver. Lucas Alexander was clocked by police driving at 103kmh per hour on a residential street in Upper Hutt, north of Wellington on January 9, 2020. He was later found to be twice the legal alcohol limit – recording a reading of 513mcg of alcohol per litre of breath. The legal limit is 250mcg.

Jade Mark Harris, 27, faced charges in the Hutt Valley District Court of driving a vehicle carelessly causing injury, not stopping after being involved in an accident and driving while forbidden.
He told the court he was half blind and had not seen the victim.
He also said his two young children were in the car and he recalled one of them screaming.
He hid his car at a friend s house but came forward to police six days later.
Mother-of-two Anna Chesterfield was heading to the pharmacy in Taita on 30 January when his car plowed into her.
