Crash victim sues Weehawken police for ‘severe, permanent’ injuries

A Union City man suffered severe permanent injuries and disfigurement in a 2019 crash that he claims was caused by a Weehawken police officer, according to a new lawsuit.
The crash occurred in the area of 37th Street and Park Avenue on Jan. 12, 2019, says the lawsuit filed by Bryan Vallejo in Hudson County Superior Court on Dec. 9.
Weehawken Police Officer Joshua Hernandez “was negligent and careless in the operation of the motor vehicle, or was otherwise inattentive that negligence and carelessness caused (Hernandez’s) vehicle . to collide with (Vallejo’s) vehicle ., causing injury to the plaintiff,” the lawsuit said.

The third man charged in the murder of a 17-year-old Jersey City girl in April refused to appear Thursday at his detention hearing for the second time this week and was ordered detained through his prosecution.
Hudson County Superior Court Judge Joseph Isabella adjourned Tuesday’s until today after a corrections officer said Jeremy Perez, 22, of Jersey City, would not appear for the livestreamed hearing. The judge had less patience 48 hours later and proceeded with the hearing without Perez.

Hudson County Superior Court Judge Sheila Venable made history Wednesday when she was appointed the first Black judge to preside over the Essex County Superior Court system the state’s largest vicinage.
The long-time judge will succeed Judge Sallyanne Floria, who is retiring after 22 years on the bench and more than five years as assignment judge. Venable’s term is effective Feb. 1, 2021.

Activists and elected leaders teamed up to hold a rally against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) outside the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny this evening.
“Defund hate, defund fear, immigrants are welcome here!” was one of several chants that rang out in front of the county jail, located at 30-35 Hackensack Ave., this afternoon.
The Hudson County Board of Commissioners (technically still freeholders) extended their deal with ICE for up to another decade at their November 24th meeting after over 10 hours of public comment, the majority of which was spent listen to the public speak out against it.

A 78-year-old Union City man charged with sexually assaulting three girls over a 15-year period is facing a fourth count after authorities say he sexually abused a girl when she was as young as 3 years old.
The girl, who is now 19, was touched by Carlos Menjivar at a birthday party in 2004, and she told family members two days later at a Christmas gathering where Menjivar was present, the criminal complaint said. At the time, family members decided not to report it to the police.
