On April 7, at approximately 1:25 a.m., members of the West New York Police Department reported a brushfire behind the West New York Swim Club in the area of 60th Street, JFK Boulevard East and Anthony M. Defino Way. The North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Department extinguished the fire. After it was placed under control, investigators found the burned remains of a human who has not yet been identified.

Hudson County welfare worker stole thousands using benefit cards,

A Hudson County welfare office worker was charged with getting cash from ATMs by using illegally obtained benefit cards. Herbert Thomas, 55, of Jersey City, an employee of the Hudson County Department of Family Services Welfare Division, used the cards at least 10 times between September and February, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez. His withdrawls totaled several thousand dollars,  she said Tuesday. Suarez did not disclose how his actions were discovered or if he is still employed with the office. He was charged with seven counts of third-degree theft and three counts of fourth-degree theft. His first court appearance is scheduled for April 6.

Rahim Harris, 42, of Newark, and  Haneefha S. White, 39, of Johnstowns, PA, were arrested after a more than 7-hour standoff at the Extended Stay Hotel on Plaza Drive, Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller said. Police received a tip around 7 p.m. saying that Harris who had been wanted out of Essex County on charges of aggravated assault was staying at the hotel.
