You can’t walk into the Oʻahu nature preserve anymore.
Jan 8, 2021
Ask anyone who’s driven past Hanauna Bay on Oʻahu recently or better, anyone who’s waiting to get inside the nature preserve in East Honolulu and they’ll tell you: It’s beyond crowded.
Since Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve reopened on Dec. 2, 2020, there have been long lines of cars along Kalanianaʻole Highway waiting to get into the parking lot. Hundreds of people line up at the entrance, waiting hours to get in. It’s a lot.
So, starting on Jan. 9, the city has issued a new entry procedure to address safety concerns: Only vehicular traffic can enter the bay. Walk-ins are not permitted.

A new ticketing system has been deployed at the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve,
the latest step in the reopening plan at the popular snorkeling and swimming spot on Oahu.
The preserve, managed by the Honolulu
Department of Parks and Recreation, reopened on Dec. 2 with strict capacity limits: Hanauma Bay averaged 3,000
visitors daily prior to Covid-19, but the reopening pilot program set daily limits at 720 people and no more than 120 per hour.
The new policies soon drew complaints of
traffic and illegal parking on the roads surrounding the preserve as visitors

The 3-mile-long Kaanapali Beach on Maui’s West Shore fronts a variety of big resorts, including four points options: the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club, The Westin Maui Resort & Spa and the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa. It’s easy to swim and snorkel from this long, walkable beach with views of Lanai and Molokai. It’s common to encounter sea turtles, and even to see humpback whales breaching the water in the distance (season dependent).
