Express News Service HUBBALLI: A group of youngsters have come together to help cremate victims of COVID-19 in the twin cities of Hubballi-Dharwad as the pandemic has triggered panic among the poor when it comes to the last rites of their deceased family members. Fears over spread of coronavirus, people are afraid to come forward and cremate those who have succumbed to the virus. They are also unable to hire and have been appealing to the government to make arrangements. Ettihad Foundation in Dharwad has cremated several victims since the first wave of COVID-19 using its own resources. Two to three six-member teams hire earthmovers to dig pits and volunteer to shift and bury the bodies. The foundation has helped with the final rites of all communities according to the rituals of that particular religion in Dharwad.

Sports enthusiasts are alleging that HDMC has dropped the project yielding to pressure from politicians. While the government is encouraging students to take part in sports activities by introducing Khelo India programme in all schools, the HDMC is trying to discourage sports enthusiasts from taking part in sports, they alleged. Speaking to STOI, 15-year-old Arjun, whois preparing for Khelo India School games said, “I am deeply hurt with the decision of authorities. We do not have suitable infrastructure to prepare for athletic events here”.

It was the pressing need to prevent assemblies and demonstrations at Kittur Chennamma (KC) Circle at the heart of Hubballi that impelled the authorities to contemplate the creation of a dedicated zone for protests. Demonstrations at KC Circle nigh invariably lead to traffic pile-up in most thoroughfares of Hubballi and Dharwad, since the circle is a nodal point connecting the twin cities to various national highways and the airport.
