While it took nearly 290 days for Humboldt County to record its first 1,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases, the next 500 have come over the span of just 18 days.
Humboldt County Public Health announced today that it has confirmed 113 new COVID-19 cases since Friday, setting a new single-day reporting record, while also confirming another COVID-related death.
Today s report comes after the county confirmed 156 new cases last week, offering a brief reprieve from a series of record-setting weekly case counts that peaked at 217 the week prior. Today s count brings December s tally to 602, which already dwarfs November s then record total of 327, as local, state and national surges continue. The prior high for cases reported locally in a single day came Dec. 7, when the county reported 88 new cases confirmed over the span of a weekend.

Humboldt County Public Health confirmed 13 new COVID-19 cases today, the lowest daily tally in a month, and for the first time in five days reported no COVID-related deaths. The county confirmed 156 new cases this week, bringing December s tally to 490, which already far surpasses November s then record total of 327 as a local, state and national surge continues. The week also saw Public Health announce five COVID-related deaths, all of residents at Granada Rehabilitation and Wellness Center. While it s now been 10 months since Humboldt County confirmed its first COVID-19 case, 35 percent of local cases, 23 percent of hospitalizations and 40 percent of deaths have come over the past 18 days.

For the fourth consecutive day, Humboldt County Public Health today reported the COVID-19 related death of a Granada Rehabilitation and Wellness Center resident, the sixth in a little more than a week. Public Health also reported today that it has confirmed 17 new COVID-19 cases, making 143 since Monday on the heels of a string of record-setting weeks that saw 217 cases confirmed last week. Today s cases bring December s tally to 476, already far surpassing November s then record total of 327. According to a county press release, 69 Granada residents and 25 staff members have now tested positive for the disease. The resident whose death was announced today was in their 100s.

In addition, another hospitalization and 36 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed. The individual was in their 60s. “We’ve been in close contact with the staff at Granada, and have offered our support to them during this very trying time,” Humboldt County Health Officer Ian Hoffman said in a news release. A total of 69 residents and 24 staff at the facility have tested positive. The latest numbers are the continuation of a dramatic spike in cases since November, which set a record of 238.
