Unidentified Fortuna Man, 40, Killed While Walking Across Hwy 101 Near Loleta Drive, CHP Says

UPDATE, Dec. 23: The Humboldt County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as 40 year old Derek Radcliffe of Fortuna, according to the CHP. ### Press release from the California Highway Patrol: On 12/18/2020, at approximately 1957 hours [7:57 p.m.], the CHP Humboldt Communication Center (HCC) received a call of a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision on United States Route 101 (US-101) northbound, south of Loleta Drive. CHP, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention, Fortuna Fire Department, and City Ambulance personnel responded to the scene. Based on CHP’s preliminary investigation, it appears this collision occurred when John Doe, a pedestrian dressed in dark clothing, walked in an easterly direction across US-101 northbound into the path of a 2010 Toyota driven by Ms. [Scarlett] Pettyjohn [age 50, of Los Angeles].

Second Suspect Arrested in Connection With Homicide in Samoa Last Month

Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office: A second suspect has been arrested in connection to a homicide occurring last month in Samoa.   Last week, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office investigators received information that a second suspect wanted in connection to the homicide of 34-year-old Perry Bailey on Nov. 15, 2020, was possibly staying in Del Norte County. The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Ian Rose, also known as Ian Pease, was located in Crescent City on December 18. When California Highway Patrol officers attempted a traffic stop on Rose, he fled. Rose was taken into custody following a brief pursuit. Rose was booked into the Del Norte County Correctional Facility on a felony warrant for accessory to murder, in addition to evading a peace officer

Deputies Find Human Remains Near Garberville While Searching Property of 76-Year-Old Missing Man

Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office: On Dec. 17, 2020, at about 5:20 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 300 block of Road D near Garberville to conduct a welfare check on a 76-year-old male resident of the property. A neighbor of the man told deputies that he had not seen or heard from the man in approximately two months. Deputies arrived at the missing man’s residence and conducted a search, however, due to darkness and the expansive associated property, deputies suspended the search until daylight the next day. On Dec. 18, deputies conducted a thorough search of the property. Utilizing a search and rescue K9 with the Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Posse, deputies located skeletal remains on the property.

Sheriff s Office Seeks Public s Help in Locating Missing McKinleyville Man

Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office: The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office needs the public’s help to locate missing person Sean Lance Hawkins, aka “Hawkeye,” age 48 , of McKinleyville. Hawkins is missing under unknown circumstances. Hawkins was reported missing by a family member on Dec. 14, 2020 at about 9:30 p.m. Hawkins was last seen on December 4 at about 10 a.m. in Eureka. His vehicle was later located unoccupied in a wooded area near Clam Beach Road and Dows Prairie Road in McKinleyville. Hawkins is described as a white male adult, approximately 6 feet tall and 185 pounds, with short brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a brown sweater, blue jeans, black hat and tennis shoes.
