Humphrey School Workshop Aims to Improve Tribal-State Relations | Hubert H Humphrey School of Public Affairs

The University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities campus is located on traditional, ancestral, and contemporary lands of Indigenous people. Over the past few years, the University has taken steps to recognize this by adopting a land acknowledgement statement, and by hiring Tadd Johnson to serve as the first senior director of American Indian Tribal Nations Relations.  Beginning last fall Johnson, an enrolled member of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa and a faculty member at the University of Minnesota Duluth, has taught a workshop through the Humphrey School of Public Affairs that examines the unique relationships between Native nations and the state of Minnesota through a public policy lens.

In her address, Dean Laura Bloomberg focused on the many challenges the Humphrey School, and the nation, faced over this past year, as well as the opportunities that lie ahead. Bloomberg noted the coronavirus pandemic is only one of several major crises that emerged in 2020; unprecedented and devastating weather events occurred as a result of climate change, and the outrage over the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers pushed the issue of racial inequities and public safety into the forefront of public debate.

Photo courtesy Sheryar Khan Every year the Humphrey School of Public Affairs welcomes a group of international fellows for a year of non-degree graduate-level study, leadership development, and professional collaboration with U.S. counterparts. One recent alumnus of that program is already using the knowledge he gained during his fellowship year to improve conditions in his native Pakistan. The participants, all mid-career professionals from designated countries, come to the Humphrey School and other universities around the country through the Humphrey Fellowship Program, created more than 40 years ago to foster global understanding and international cooperation.

SFP Research Intern Abigail Magnus is an intern with the SFP research team. Abby (she/hers and they/them) recently completed her Master s in Social Work and Economics, focusing her thesis on the long-term social and economic costs of poverty in the United States. She has experience in public health, housing, and economic research. She most recently worked at the State Innovation Exchange and previously worked for the Colorado Senate Majority Leader during the 2018 session. Abby lives in Denver, Colorado with her three roommates and a golden retriever named Olive. She is passionate about social and economic justice and is interested in a career in state fiscal policy.
