NEW YORK, NY .-James Cohan is presenting an exhibition of work by Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, on view from January 29 through March 6 at 48 Walker Street and January 29 through February 27 at 291 Grand Street. The exhibition spans both of the gallerys locations, with a presentation of three major sculptural series in Tribeca and a selection of the artists geometric drawings, related sculptures, and a nine-element installation in the Lower East Side. This is the late artists first exhibition with James Cohan.

For the artist Abigail DeVille, watching Black Lives Matter marches over the past summer was pivotal. She recalls the throngs of protesters, arms linked, eyes staring straight amid a full on pandemic. Those images, seared in her memory, prompted the creation of her sculpture, Light of Freedom (2020), commissioned by the Madison Square Park Conservancy and installed in the Manhattan-based park. The work takes the ubiquitous image of Lady Liberty’s torch and infuses it with contemporary symbolism. The work incorporates scaffolding as a sort of golden cage, in which a torch is suspended. The fiery blue flames of the object are in fact entwined mannequin arms pointing into the distance.

PALM BEACH, FLA .- Sol LeWitt: Cubic Forms explores the artists use of the cube as the base unit for a prolific body of work including structures, drawings, prints, and photographs. In the early 1960s, opposed to the subjectivity of Expressionism, LeWitt turned to systematic geometry by devising basic sets of rules that governed the execution and design of a work of art. The cube, LeWitt boldly asserted in 1966, is the best form to use as a basic unit for any more elaborate function, the grammatical device from which the work may proceed.
