The Austin Justice Coalition is holding a rally Thursday afternoon to call for continued activism against racial injustice and police violence following the guilty verdict in the Derek Chauvin murder trial
Chauvin was a Minneapolis police officer last year who, while arresting George Floyd, was caught on a bystander s video pressing his knee against Floyd s neck for more than 9 minutes as pleaded that he couldn t breathe.
Chauvin was convicted Tuesday of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
The rally in Austin, scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday at Huston-Tillotson University in East Austin, will include a vigil in honor of Floyd, as well as for Adam Toledo, Daunte Wright, Breonna Taylor and other people of color around the country who have been killed by law enforcement officers, organizers said.
The Teeta
When the pandemic hit last March, hip hop artist (and native Austinite) The Teeta, like many performers, suddenly found himself unable to connect with his audience the way he used to. “I’m a performer. Like, I love being on stage,” Teeta says. “[The pandemic] just completely took that part of my life out. I’ve probably done over… 250 shows since 2016, so for that to be just completely stripped away – not even taking into account the financial aspect of it – that really did affect me heavily. I just tried to connect more through the music, you know what I mean? Just go back to the basics and make music.”

AUSTIN, Texas Just days after a jury found former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd, Austin Justice Coalition called on the community to continue making progress. It was one very small moment that the justice system seemed to be working, Chas Moore, who runs Austin Justice Coalition, said. I would challenge us to think a little bit more and beyond what happened on Tuesday, because at the same time that verdict was being read, a young lady in Columbus, Ohio, was shot.

The event, organized by the Austin Justice Coalition, featured guest speakers who both celebrated the guilty verdict in the Derek Chauvin murder trial, but also pointed to the need to fight systemic racism and inequalities experienced by people of color and other oppressed communities.
