Poll: Do you keep auto-rotate enabled on your phone?

Poll: Do you keep auto-rotate enabled on your phone? Credit: Hadlee Simons / Android Authority Auto-rotation is one of the more long-standing features on smartphones today, allowing phones to automatically shift apps and menus between portrait and landscape orientation as the device is turned accordingly. Many smartphones include an auto-rotate toggle in the quick settings section of the notification shade (as seen above), allowing you to activate or deactivate auto-rotate at the drop of a hat. But do you keep auto-rotate enabled on your phone? Let us know via the poll at the bottom of the page. We’re specifically talking about whether you use the system-wide auto-rotate toggle in the notification shade or in the settings menu. So if your phone is only set to auto-rotate when viewing pictures and videos, you can vote “no.”

Crazy Galaxy S22 Ultra leak suggests continuous zoom camera

A new rumor points to Samsung adopting a continuous zoom camera for the S22 Ultra. This would allow for a variety of zoom factors and consistent quality with one camera. The source also claims Samsung will bring an under-display selfie camera and AMD GPU to the phone. Samsung is inevitably working on the Galaxy S22 series, as the company has offered a Galaxy S flagship in the first half of each year for ages now. This year’s Galaxy S21 Ultra follows in Huawei’s footsteps by offering two telephoto cameras (3X and 10X), but a new rumor points to Samsung upping the ante in a big way.

Poll: What sound profile do you primarily use on your phone? Credit: Hadlee Simons / Android Authority It’s easy to forget that smartphones are actually phones that can make or receive calls (imagine that?!). But all it takes is a ringtone to make us realize that we’ve got a device capable of more than just taking photos and browsing the web. Then again, how many Android Authority readers have their phone set to ring for incoming calls in the first place? We’d like to know what sound profile you primarily use on your phone. Vote in the poll below and leave a comment if you’d like to elaborate.

Multitasking a pain on your Xiaomi phone? A new solution is in the works

Multitasking a pain on your Xiaomi phone? A new solution is in the works. Xiaomi is reportedly working on a RAM “extension” feature in MIUI. This would essentially use some free storage space as virtual RAM. Today’s smartphones generally come with plenty of RAM, and it’s not uncommon to find 4GB or even 6GB of RAM in budget devices. Some users might still suffer from multitasking and performance woes though, but Xiaomi is reportedly working on a solution. Xiaomi tipster Kacper Skrzypek discovered references to a so-called memory extension feature in MIUI, later revealing a screenshot of the feature as well. The references and screenshot suggest that MIUI is able to allocate a set amount of storage to be used as virtual RAM of sorts. Check out his screenshot below.

Can companies stop with the tacky branding on the back of their phones?

Credit: Dhruv Bhutani / Android Authority Smartphone designs have come a long way in just over a decade, with full-screen displays, glass or high quality plastic backs, and metal frames being a fixture on today’s high-end devices. We’ve even seen great designs from budget devices, such as the Poco M3, Pixel 4a, and Oppo Reno 5 Pro. But there has been one unpleasant design trend in recent times, and that’s the move by some companies to add garish branding across the back of their phones. No, we don’t mean simply having the company name on the lower rear of the phone, but rather the name or slogans running almost all the way across the back of the device. Or simply making the branding so prominent that it becomes the dominant design feature.
