(WDAM) - The first shipments of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine have made their way to the Magnolia State. It’s been described by healthcare workers as the first of its kind, and local doctors are breaking down how the vaccine works. “We are just telling our body to reproduce the spike protein by which we then make antibodies to that so effectively. What this does is it doesn’t allow the SARS-COV2 virus to bind to our cells, which then effectively just kills it in our system because it can’t replicate itself,” said Dr. Rambod Rouhbakhsh with the Hattiesburg Clinic and Forrest General Hospital.

The Mississippi State Medical Association’s clarion call of “Mask Up Mississippi” will now be combined with “Vax Up Mississippi.” “We’re doing this as a demonstration to let people see that we mean what we say and we’ll do what we say,” explained MSMA President Dr. Mark Horne. Bryant,  a leader in child and adolescent psychiatry, as the interim chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine.  She has been working with Dr. Jeffery Matthews to ensure a smooth transition prior to his departure from UTHSCT in mid-December to assume the role of chief medical officer at the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.             Bryant has extensive leadership experience serving in numerous program and medical director roles. She currently is an associate professor of psychiatry and human behavior at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson, Mississippi, where she has served since 2017.
