City, hospital planning mass vaccination clinic
ELLSWORTH The city is exploring sites to set up a vaccination clinic in partnership with Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital that would serve 800 to 1,000 people a day, City Manager Glenn Moshier told councilors on Feb. 8. Currently, the Ellsworth hospital is able to vaccinate about 250 people a day while Northern Light’s hospital in Blue Hill manages 100 daily vaccinations.
“A stand-alone site separate from the hospital would be able to serve a lot more people a lot more efficiently,” Moshier said. Prioritized in receiving vaccinations would be those who need it the most and those “who have the most difficulty with the current process to get signed up for a vaccination,” Moshier said. They are also “working on ways to give some priority to folks here in Ellsworth.”
Ellsworth schools go fully remote after positive COVID-19 test
ELLSWORTH Ellsworth School District Superintendent Dan Higgins notified parents and staff on Sunday, Jan. 24, that all schools will be fully remote on Monday, Jan. 25, after “an individual associated with Ellsworth High School tested positive” for COVID-19.
Ten staff members and approximately 65 students were identified as close contacts of the COVID-19-positive person, who was last present at the high school on Wednesday, Jan. 20. Contact tracing is continuing, and the person who tested positive is currently quarantining per CDC guidelines, Higgins stated, adding that anyone identified as a close contact must quarantine under the CDC guidelines, even if they receive a negative test result.
Wednesday December 16th to Be Remote Learning for All Ellsworth Schools
The individual who tested positive was last in the building Monday December 14 and will remain in isolation and quarantine consistent with CDC guidelines. As of 2:00 p.m. 3 staff members and 5 students were identified as close contacts and staff will be continuing the contact tracing process this afternoon.
Out of an abundance of caution, to permit additional cleaning in the rooms and areas where the infected individual was present, and to permit additional time to finalize the contact tracing process, Wednesday, December 16, 2020 will be a “remote learning day” for all students and staff at Ellsworth Elementary-Middle School. As further contact tracing may result in close contacts being identified at our other schools, Wednesday, December 16, 2020 will also be a “remote learning day” for all students and staff at
Mask sales to support veteran housing, Pride
LAMOINE Kasey Jordan has been helping her community for years. And she is only a junior in high school.
The Lamoine resident, Mount Desert Island High School and Hancock County Technical Center student and Girl Scout is often found working on initiatives that benefit her neighbors.
Currently, Kasey is busy sewing masks that she can sell to raise money to fund her project to earn her Gold Award for Girl Scouts. Her work is having a ripple effect, reaching the Ellsworth High School Gender/Sexuality Diversity Alliance (GSDA) and even local businesses.
The Gold Award is the most prestigious a Girl Scout can earn, according to the organization’s website. Achieving the award requires identifying an issue in the community, thoroughly researching it and acting on a plan to combat it.
