In case you haven’t noticed the warnings along Interstate 64 and connecting roads, be prepared for an hour-long delay on the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel very early Sunday morning, as VDOT runs its pre-hurricane season test of its tide gates.
The gates are the 54-foot wide, 16-foot tall assembly of steel beams and thick steel plates that Virginia Department of Transportation workers would lower if a hurricane or nor’easter brings a storm surge of at least 7½ feet. That’s the height at which the water would come over the bridge and run down into the tunnel, said Ken Reynard, VDOT regional operations director.
