A 3-month-old baby, La Mello Smith, was killed by a single gunshot wound after a police chase involving his father on Monday.
Dozens of police vehicles were pursuing Eric Derell Smith from Baton Rouge in the United States on Monday, 3 May, after he allegedly killed two people earlier that day. The chase eventually came to a tragic end, on the median of the highway, when police opened fire. Both Smith and his 3-month-old baby, who was in the car, were fatally wounded.

BILOXI, Miss. A single gunshot killed an infant who was with his father as the Louisiana man died in a barrage of gunfire after Mississippi police chased the man because he was suspected of killing the baby s mother and another person, a coroner said Wednesday.
An autopsy was conducted on La’Mello Parker, who was just over 3 months old. The coroner of Harrison County, Mississippi Brian Switzer told The Associated Press that Biloxi police investigators will compare the bullet to the weapons that were fired at the scene to try to determine the source of the fatal shot.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff s office said that the baby s father, 30-year-old Eric Derell Smith, entered his ex-girlfriend s Louisiana home shortly before noon on Monday and shot and killed 32-year-old Christin Parker and her 26-year-old nephew, Brandon Parker. Eric Smith, 30, and his 3-month-old baby died during a shootout with police. Authorities say Smith entered his ex-girlfriend s home, where he killed her and her nephew before fleeing with the baby.

BILOXI, Miss. (AP) A baby boy taken by his father from the scene of a double homicide in Louisiana died at a hospital on Tuesday, hours after the man was killed by Mississippi law enforcement officers who fired a barrage of bullets at the car, authorities said.
The coroner in Harrison County, Mississippi, Brian Switzer, said that the baby, who was born in January, died about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday at USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital in Mobile, Alabama. Switzer said an autopsy will be done to determine the cause.
