Local leaders, officials react to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez nomination to lead ICE

HOUSTON – Local officials and lawmakers are all reacting to Harris County Sherriff Ed Gonzalez being nominated to lead ICE by President Biden.
The announcement came Tuesday afternoon from the Biden administration named a number of people who will be nominated to lead various national security agencies.
So far, the sheriff has not publicly weighed in on the announcement, but others have.
“I’m just really happy that the administration has seen his talent and I think they’ll gain an incredibly talented leader,” said Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo.

HOUSTON – Harris County is moving away from a vaccine waitlist to an appointment-making system.
Officials at Harris County Public Health said that supply of the coronavirus vaccine is starting to meet demand, which means they can start letting people make their own appointments.

After monitoring air and water quality levels overnight, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality said it did not find any areas of concern after a massive chemical fire burned in the Channelview area for hours Wednesday.
The TCEQ said regional staff used handheld air monitoring and stationary monitors overnight, which did not detect any issues of concern.
