Biden selected Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez as director for ICE. Gonzalez will have to navigate a closely divided Senate to earn the job and at a time when liberal Democrats are determined to shutter the Department of Homeland Security agency rather than appoint a new leader. Gonzalez is a lifelong resident of Houston and is in his second term as sheriff of the third-largest sheriff s office in the country. He first joined the Houston Police Department and worked his way up from a civilian position to officer, then sergeant. He retired from the Police Department in 2009 and was elected to three terms on the Houston City Council before running for sheriff.
