The Hardin County Sheriff s Office said 69-year-old Lee Simon walked to get his mail across the street from his home on Friday around 2:15 p.m., on State Route 53, just east of the village of Forest.

Updated: 9:41 AM EDT May 22, 2021 HARDIN COUNTY, Ohio - A 16-year-old boy was killed when he crashed into a tree early Saturday morning, according to the Hardin County Sheriff s Office. The sheriff s office said Neil Williams was driving at a high rate of speed on State Route 53, south of the village of Forest, around 1:10 a.m. when he lost control. Williams, of Forest, drove off the right side of the road and hit a tree.  The sheriff s office said he was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash is still under investigation.

Pedestrian struck, killed by juvenile driver near Forest FOREST A rural Forest man is dead after being struck by an unnamed juvenile around 2:15 p.m. Friday on state Route 53, east of the village of Forest. According to the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office, Lee E. Simon, 69, had just crossed the road to pick up his mail from his mailbox and proceeded back across the road when he was struck by an eastbound driver. Simon was declared deceased at the scene. The 16-year-old driver was not hurt and was released from the scene with his father. The crash remains under investigation.

Local leader made impact on community

After losing her first husband to a work-related accident in 1975, June Thornberry Raine was a working widow with children. “She was committed to making sure that her kids had the opportunity in life to succeed,” said Marty Fulkerson, Elizabeth­town city councilman and a friend of Thornberry Raine. By that point, Thornberry Raine already had begun a long career in banking, and would become a formidable part of the Hardin County community. Thornberry Raine died Sunday at Atria in Elizabethtown with her family there. She was 94. According to her obituary, she was born on July 10, 1926, and married her first husband, Jimmy Thornberry, in 1949.
