Art in Action: Young Artists’ Vision of 2020
The Mandell Jewish Community Center, in collaboration with the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, will showcase “Art in Action: Young Artists’ Vision of 2020,” a collection of creative work that captured the thoughts and emotions of teens from across the Greater Hartford region during the Covid-19 crisis. Before the COVID-19 pandemic turned the world upside down, cities in Connecticut and across the country were coming back, but unevenly. Typically, downtowns were prospering, but some impoverished neighborhoods, usually home to communities of color, still struggled.
The pandemic, as has been widelyreported, made things worse, exposing and aggravating racial disparities in employment and wealth, health care, housing and criminal justice. The challenges of responding to this urgent plight were described in a 12-part CT Mirror series in 2020.
The Town of Windsor will be accepting grants from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving and the Connecticut Department of Public Health, to fund the awareness and promotion of the COVID-19 vaccines and to develop outreach programs to make the vaccines more easily accessible to residents in under-served populations. It was quiet in the galleries last September as I took a final walk through the Wadsworth Atheneum before the grand unveiling of our eight-year project to bring back its glories. I wondered how our members, patrons, the press, and the public would respond to all that we have done here. It has been a long haul, full of ups and downs in the economically stressed city of Hartford, Connecticut, as we renovated and upgraded the museum’s aged buildings so that its world-class collections could be reinstalled.
