These players set standards for most pro games played
I’ll be honest with you. I didn’t know who Patrick Marleau was. I do now. And you should know about him, too, because Monday night the 41-year-old forward set a record by playing in his 1,768th regular-season National Hockey League game. And what makes that feat even more impressive is the previous standard-bearer was “Mr. Hockey” himself, Gordie Howe.
Back in 1997, Marleau found his way to San Jose, after the Sharks drafted the forward from the frozen ponds of Saskatchewan in the second round. With the exception of brief stints in Toronto and Pittsburgh, he’s called the Silicon Valley home for 20 of his 23 seasons. And, during that time, he’s played an integral role in helping hockey flourish in that central California high-tech hub.

Any hockey observer can tell you they make ‘em farm-boy tough on the Prairies. That strength doesn’t have to come at the expense of sweetness, though. Take, for instance, the scene that involved two sons of Saskatchewan more than 10 years ago at the 2009 NHL All-Star Game in Montreal.
There was Patrick Marleau, exploiting a patch of concrete in the bowels of the Bell Centre to play a game of mini-stick with his then-toddler son, Landon. Suddenly, 80-year-old Gordie Howe did what the game’s best goal-scorers do materialize from nowhere and jumped in on the action.

Patrick Marleau can pass Gordie Howe for the most NHL games played when the San Jose Sharks forward plays No. 1,768 at the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday. I ll try to take it all in as much as possible, Marleau said Saturday after playing game 1,767. The fun part is playing an actual game and all that, but my family s going to be there to help celebrate, so it ll be super special having them in the building.
San Jose lost 5-2 at the Minnesota Wild on Saturday when the 41-year-old forward tied Howe.
