BEL AIR â Harford County Public Schools (HCPS) is gearing up for a twice-weekly reopening beginning next month, an abrupt shift from its previous once-a-week plan that followed increased pressure from state authorities and community members.
HCPS Superintendent Sean Bulson said in a board of education meeting last week that the district is seeking a compromise to balance the safety concerns regarding reopening with the fears many parents share about learning loss among students.
âThis is not ideal for anybody,â Bulson said. âI understand the perspectives everyone brings, whether itâs those who are more concerned for their safety and concerned about moving in or those who are tremendously frustrated with virtual learning and being at home.â
The Harford County Board of Education is requesting more than $519.5 million in operating funds for local public schools in the next fiscal year a reduction of nearly $2.2 million from what Superintendent Sean Bulson and his administration proposed after HCPS officials learned more about the status of their state funding.
The changes sought by Republican Del. Rick Impallaria would strike the entire House Bill 283 as it was written, and instead have a fully elected school board by six councilmanic districts and another at-large member elected to serve as the board president, mirroring the make-up of the Harford County Council.
