Brunswick technical school facing spending hike due to COVID, more staff

Region 10 Technical High School, which services Brunswick and nearby school districts, is looking at a spending increase of either 13% or 18%, driven largely by COVID-19 pandemic and a request for additional staff.
Superintendent Paul Perzanoski presented two budget scenarios Tuesday that saw the current $2.6 million budget increase by either $419,149 or $544,149.
In either scenario, increases are due to the school board’s decision to sign a five-year lease for a modular building that includes six classrooms. The building would provide enough space to safely distance students and staff, helping prevent the spread of COVID, allowing the school to fully reopen to in-person instruction next school year.

Due to the current Department of Education requirements for reopening schools during the coronavirus pandemic, Region Ten interim superintendent Paul Perzanoski said Monday that the school can’t fully reopen to students without the extra classroom space.

BRUNSWICK Region Ten Technical High School may be getting a modular building in order to fully reopen to in-person instruction next school year, despite the pandemic.
The school’s facilities committee recommends installing a six-classroom building over the summer, in time to open full-time in the fall, said Interim Superintendent Paul Perzanoski on Monday.
Region Ten serves Brunswick School Department, Maine School Administrative District 75, Regional School Unit 5, as well as students from public charter school Harpswell Coastal Academy, Lisbon and Morse high school and homeschool students.
