In Braddock, everyone has an opinion about John Fetterman.
Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor was mayor of the struggling steel town for 13 years. He built his political reputation in Braddock, to such a degree that when people mention the town of under 2,000 people, they often mention Fetterman in the same breath.
Now, as Fetterman embarks on a well-funded campaign for Pennsylvania’s 2022 U.S. Senate race, his record in Braddock is both his bedrock, and a thorn in his side. Because when you talk to the people who live in Braddock and know the former mayor’s work well, complicated feelings emerge.

My mother is at her best in a crisis.
As a child, I remember watching her tend to an injured horse. One hand rested on the horseâs shoulder; the other pressed gauze firmly against a gash in his leg that was evenly spurting blood. Mom wore Carhartt overalls and a wool cap, her hair in a simple braid down her back. She worked quickly and calmly, holding inch-thick wads to his hot skin until the blood soaked through to her palm. His coat had been clipped for winter and the knobby joints of his knees pushed through his delicate skin. Occasionally, she would stroke his neck and he would turn to look at her, his eyes dark and sad and kind.
Late Chukwuma
The rude shock that astounded the human rights community recently was further amplified by the sudden death of Innocent Chukwuma. Until his death on the eve of Easter Saturday, Chukwuma was the head of the Centre for Law Enforcement Education in Nigeria (CLEEN) Foundation, a civic advocacy group he founded 20 years ago as a think tank to monitor policing. While he nurtured that foundation to become one of the most credible social advocacy groups in the country, Chukwuma worked in coalition with other notable human rights groups to carry out law enforcement and citizens’ education as well as police reforms.
Rather than turning exclusively to cognitive science and contemporary ethical theories, Hershock shows how classical Confucian and Socratic philosophies help to make visible what a history of choices about remaking ourselves through control biased technology has rendered invisible. Klaus Schwab, the founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum, said companies must focus on three principles: profitability, people, and the planet.
Schwab, the author of Stakeholder Capitalism: A Global Economy that Works for Progress, People and Planet, has championed the stakeholder capitalism model, in which businesses serve both shareholders and society as a whole. If they haven t bought in yet into the stakeholder concept, they are on the wrong side of history, said Schwab, a speaker at the Insider s event, Act to Impact: Keeping Our Promises to the Planet.
He said executives who are focused on the long term have adopted the mindset of creating shareholder value while also taking care of the planet. But, if you want to make a fast buck, it s a different matter, Schwab said during the Holding Stakeholders Accountable session.
