Holland teacher, students receive awards from local DAR chapter

Sentinel Staff HOLLAND A number of awards have been distributed to local students, and one teacher, by Holland s Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter. The chapter announced Wednesday, March 10, it had awarded the 2021 DAR Outstanding Teacher of American History Award to Keely Morse a history teacher at Black River Public School in Holland. Morse has a history degree from the University of Michigan and a master s degree on the American Civil War from American Public University. To be selected for the annual award, a teacher must specialize in American history at the middle or high school level, have incisive knowledge of history that is shared readily with students, maintain high academic standards, obtain three letters of support and complete a dossier.

Holland tunesmith Mark Harrell embraces connections with audiences

Jan 16, 2021 ISHPEMING, MI – Paul Bluekamp, 89, of Ishpeming, entered his eternal heavenly home, on January 7, at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility. Paul was born in Holland, Michigan, on January 14, 1931, to the late Albert and Ella (Klassen) Bluekamp. Paul graduated from Holland Christian High School in 1948 and later attended Hope College and Michigan State University where he earned a degree in Geology. His college education was temporarily interrupted however when he was called to serve his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He married Carol Vander Hill on September 26, 1953. After graduation, Paul joined Steinman Engineering and worked on the Mackinac Bridge for several years. In fact, some of the equipment he used was dedicated to and is still displayed in the museum in Lansing dedicated to the building of the bridge.
