Holland City Council supportive of public broadband project
HOLLAND Holland officials were enthusiastic about the city s continued pursuit of a publicly owned broadband infrastructure build-out as they were updated on the project s status in a Wednesday city county study session.
The project as it is currently being discussed would involve the construction of an open-access fiber optic network reaching the entire city.
Internet service providers would be able to use the public infrastructure to bring reliable, high-speed internet to consumers. Consumers could also choose to have the Holland Board of Public Works as their internet service provider. HBPW has about 100 customers, mostly small businesses, in its downtown internet utility service area, which began as a pilot program in 2017.

HOLLAND Holland s City Council and Board of Public Works leaders will host a joint study session meeting Wednesday to hear an update on broadband internet in the city.
A city broadband task force was created in the fall of 2019 to study public interest in and options for a publicly-owned fiber network accessible to the broader community.
This year, the city council named broadband internet as one of its top policy priorities.
On the schedule for Wednesday s meeting is a presentation and time for discussion.
The council and board will meet at 5:30 Wednesday using the videoconferencing platform Zoom.
The meeting is open to the public. Members of the public may join the Zoom meeting or watch the proceedings live on the city of Holland s YouTube channel.
