Murder: 1 suspect apprehended, 1 sought

On Monday, William Hunter, 21, from the Roanoke Rapids area, turned himself in to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, according to a press release from Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Bobby Martin. William and Leon Hunter, 36, also of the Roanoke Rapids area, were sought in regard to a Sept. 14 incident, when officers with the RRPD responded to the Baymont Inn on Old Farm Road, in reference to a male subject being shot. When officers arrived, they located the subject, who had a gunshot to the head. The victim, Aaron Martin, a 25-year-old male from Weldon, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators were able to develop information they were able to follow up on, which led them to obtain warrants on Leon Hunter and William Hunter for the murder of Martin. Investigators were also able to obtain warrants on Sari Fakhri Yousef for accessory before the fact and felony conspiracy. Yousef was arrested by Rocky Mount Police Department on Dec. 4, and released on a $60,000 secured bond.

Crime Roundup: HCSO and RRPD

Wednesday Shortly after 7 p.m., agents of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office were in the area of Wendover Lane in Roanoke Rapids following up on drug complaints. Agents had received complaints of possible drug activity, several cars going to a residence staying a short time then leaving throughout the night. Agent B.J. Murphy stopped a vehicle leaving the Wendover Lane residence on West Tenth Street near Colonial Drive for a motor vehicle violation. During the search, smoking pipes and cocaine were seized. Murphy cited the driver, Wendy Wells, 54, of Roanoke Rapids, with a North Carolina Uniform Citation for possession of drug paraphernalia. Murphy arrested and charged Melissa Christine Trezza, 37, for felony possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Arrest made following pursuit

At about 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Lt. E. Carroll with the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a 1998 Oldsmobile on Interstate 95 near the 172 mile post for reckless driving, speeding, seat belt violation and failure to operate headlamps in the rain. The vehicle failed to stop and Carroll gave chase in and around the city of Roanoke Rapids and then back onto I-95, according to a press release from Chief Deputy Scott Hall. The driver, Nathan Lassiter Keith, 21, of Raleigh, fled into Virginia and later crashed into the guardrail in an attempt to cross the interstate. Keith jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot and was later apprehended a short distance from the crash site by Carroll and Deputy M. Bishop. Keith was turned over to the Virginia State Police for impaired driving.
