Top general warns Beijing could “overmatch” Western alliance as Canada steps up provocations against China
Canada’s chief of defence staff, Lt. Gen. Wayne Eyre, recently told parliament that Canada and the United States are at risk of being “overmatched” by China’s military, accused Beijing of “constantly” “imposing its will on its neighbours,” and claimed that the US imperialist-led “rules-based international order” is in peril.
Eyre’s remarks came as Canada’s ruling elite, through its media mouthpieces and political parties, continues to escalate its provocative campaign of lurid accusations against China. This has included attempts to blame China for Canada’s disastrous response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this campaign is to demonize Beijing so as to mobilize support for the US-led war drive against China and intimidate its opponents.

Its hard to think of a more deserving candidate. Since her election in 2016, she has seen off populist opponents, a deluge of fake news seeking to undermine her leadership in the eyes of Taiwanese, an ongoing barrage of diplomatic attacks from China, and a dramatic increase in military threats to her country. All the while, she has shown a level of calmness and composure that is a credit to her office. Don’t get me wrong, she has made political missteps along the way, but her statesmanlike qualities have shone through regardless. Nothing quite epitomizes her term of office like her response to The Economist’s sensationalist headline last week that described Taiwan as “the most dangerous place on Earth.”

Taiwan’s President Awarded Halifax Forum Prize
A federal-funded international security forum has announced the Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen the winner of its flagship prize, despite pressure from both the Canadian and Chinese government.
The Halifax International Security Forum awarded the 2020 John McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service to Tsai, calling her “champion of freedom” in a video released on Monday.

Tsai was elected as the first female President of Taiwan in 2016 and was reelected last year with a record vote, promising in her campaign to defend the democracy of the island country against threats from neighboring China.
